Submit Barcode Data
The Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) has established BARCODE data standards that have been approved by the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), which consists of GenBank, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Nucleotide Sequence Database (EMBL-Bank), and the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ). The data standards create unprecedented connections among gene sequences, sequencer trace files, primer sequences, voucher specimens, and valid taxonomic names.There are two systems for entering BARCODE data records into one of INSDC’s databases:
- GenBank has created the BARCODE Submission Tool (BarSTool) that allows researchers to upload records that comply with the BARCODE data standards as individual records or in batches;
- The Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding (CCDB) has created the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD), a workbench for barcode researchers around the world. BOLD allows individuals or teams of researchers to assemble their specimen data, sequences, trace files, specimen images, and associated data in preparation of uploading them to GenBank. BOLD’s identification module can compare sequences from unidentified specimens with the 200,000+ records in BOLD. BOLD also allows cooperating teams of researchers to compare their barcode data and to refine their taxonomic identifications.
