Vision

BOLI participants are dedicated to developing DNA barcoding as a global standard for species identification.  To reach this goal, BOLI is:

• Improving the information infrastructure of biology by associating specimens, taxonomic names, and diagnostic gene sequences;
• Adding 21st century diagnostic molecular data to the defining characteristics (morphology, ecology, behavior, geography) now used to identify biological species;
• Creating the tools needed for a cost-effective, rapid system of species identification that can be used by non-specialists;
• Expanding the toolkit used by taxonomic researchers as they improve our understanding of global biodiversity; and
• Creating global reference library of diagnostic barcode sequences for the identification of species.
